08/18/11: Distal

Distal is an amazing producer, the kind of musician who’s able to soak up the numerous micro-genres hovering around all DJ’s in these almost-post-record store times, yet use them to alchemize a final product that doesn’t fit squarely into any of said genres.

Here Distal drops a tiiight sojourn into his own jams and compositions he’s currently feeling, proving that he’s not just another “juke-influenced” producer, but an all around ill musician.

Stay tuned to hear him talk about how his Atlantian (dirty south, not mythical underwater metropolis) background has shaped his DJ and song-writing style, his own Embassy Recordings, plus his upcoming projects including his huge Tectonic LP.

@DistalDub

08/11/11: DJ Rashad

DJ Rashad is one of the leaders of juke’s continuing march into the brains of music lovers in all realms outside Chicago, and for good reason.  While he can throw down straight up buuurrrnnn-ass Juke tracks with the best of  them, he’s also into just about anything, and has the creative mind and production chops to bring a myriad of influences into his tracks.  He’s also a KILLER DJ, which this set more than proves; I had listeners IM/Text me during this set to remark it was one of the better Rashad DJ set’s they’d ever heard.

No interview, just straight bangers for mad long :-O

@DJRASHAD

08/04/11: Kingdom

Kingdom is perhaps one of the most talked about producers in the world of bassy/interesting/electronic dance music these days. His notorious ability to flip tired UK standards and add an undeniably sexy, R&B, American edge to them has him in-demand across this great planet of ours.  He displays the trademark of a great talent: the ability to create an unforgetable jam using the simplest of ingredients.  Plus he co-founded and runs the Fade to Mind label, home to some of the most original and mind-blowing electronic music acts on the planet.

Don’t miss this super eclectic exclusive DJ set, but REALLY don’t miss a pretty fascinating interview at the end, where Kingdom talks his creative process (including the surprisingly spartan setup he used for hits like Take Me and Mindreader), the spark that lead to the nascent Fade to Mind label (plus what we can soon expect from the excellent imprint), working in NYC vs. LA, and the future of music itself.

07/14/11: DJ Spinn (DJ Set + Interview)

DJ Spinn has been a major pioneer in the transition from ghettohouse / ghettotech to what is now internationally known as Juke.  Along with his Ghetto Teknicianz crew, DJ Spinn stands alongside the other masters of Chicago dance music, past and present, both as a producer and a DJ.

Spinn ain’t old, but he’s definitely a vet of the game and had a lot of interesting things to say about the evolution of house music and his individual career path. Since this was a prerecord (and Spinns chill as heck), we were lucky enough to get a great interview AND a really tight DJ set.

By now you should know what happens when these cats from Chicago come to Math + Science.  They drop a blistering, face-melting, hell of tight mix packed with originals, exclusives, rarities, classics, obscurities, bangs & works.

June: Saved By The Rhythm

OK so by now this webpage / radio show has already introduced you to the mighty Broken Teeth Crew.  These guys span Texas, NYC, and I think Berlin, Mars, Hades, The Shire, The Matrix…they roll deep.  Among these illustrious DJs/producers/promoters/artists etc. are Ace & Black Lauren aka Saved By The Rhythm, two producer-DJs who have a sound that I really think can be best described by the word “smoooooth”.  As in, “wow, when I drank champagne off that stripper’s freshly Nair’d bewbz it tasted exceedingly smoooooth”.

They’re DJs first, but they’ve been producing lately and the results are tight (stay tuned for more on that in the near future wink wink).  You can hear some originals in this mix, but mostly you can hear how nice these guys get on the decks…its a really collllddd combination of soulful R&B-infused house and dark, “just one more K line i promise” backroom techno.

07/21/11: Cousin Cole

I first met Cousin Cole when a young man named Tali (now essentially a Dutty Artz globe trotting bass journalist) hired Cole, Rezound, and me to play a party at Bard College.  I’d been scratching alone in my bedroom for years but this was like the 3rd time I was DJing a party-type party in my whole life.  I was quite nervous, and on the ride up to the campus I remember asking Cole what kind of music he spun.  He said something along the lines of, “Y’know…whatever the situation calls for.”

This remains a fairly accurate representation of the man’s body of work.  A lot of music fans will know Cole as a deadly remixer, and this show is a testament to that fact.  A lot of DJs can mix anything with anything, but it would seem Cole can remix anything and have it come out sounding better on the other end.  Everything from sweaty-lazer’d-out moombahton to The Boss to fixed-gear-skinny-white-people-hand-clapping-anthems to just straight up house jams all benefit from a Cousin Cole remix.

I don’t want to downplay dude’s DJ skills w/all this talk of remixing, either.  And I’ve sorta skipped his bio.  But just check this mix out srsly.  Especially the Bruce remix.
